Causes of eyebrow loss

Eyebrow loss could be due to medical reasons or other reasons. Other reasons like over-plucking or waxing could leave you with thinner brows or even kill your hair follicles so that hair never grows back there. Also, you can suffer eyebrow loss from excessive itching or rubbing of your arches which could lead to pulling hair out.

More so, things like genetics, ageing, hormones, stress, lifestyle, alopecia, vitamin deficiency, etc. can also contribute to loss of eyebrows.

Certain diseases and skin disorders can also be attributed to hair loss, diseases like:

Eczema. Eczema is a result of an oversensitive immune system; it affects hair follicles in the skin which can delay hair growth.

Psoriasis. This type of disease is autoimmune and has no cure; it causes the skin cells to multiply ten times faster than normal. In most people with such conditions, psoriasis causes painful patches on the skin that blocks hair follicles and hinders growth. Thyroid disease and Leprosy are other causes of eyebrow loss.

Chemotherapy. This is a process used to treat cancer. Chemotherapy damages the hair follicles because it targets and damages all fast-growing cells in the body and that includes the cells responsible for hair growth.

Do eyebrows grow back?

Certainly, eyebrows do grow back but the growth is dependent on the cause of the loss. Eyebrow loss from overtweezing or plucking will most likely grow back, same as brow loss from alopecia areata that is successfully treated with cortisone injections.

However, hair loss from frontal fibrosing alopecia can cause scarring which will result in permanent loss of hair.

How long does it take for eyebrows to grow back?

Determining how long it will take for eyebrow hair to grow is dependent on the cause of the hair loss. In general, it takes between four to eight weeks post-hair loss for you to notice new hair, but around four months before the hair gets to its full length. The hair growth has different stages listed below.

The Anagen phase. This is the first phase of the new hair growth and is regarded as the growth stage. This is the stage where the eyebrows grow to their predetermined limit; it takes about thirty to forty-five days.

The Catagen phase. Referred to as the transition stage, the follicle gets closer to the skin and starts to shrink before the final stage. This process is between two to three weeks.

Telogen phase. This is the final stage of hair growth and it is referred to as the resting or shedding phase. Here, new hair begins to grow from the follicles, which means, the old hair will fall off for new strands to continue the cycle. This process takes between four to eight weeks.

Ways to speed up the eyebrow growth process

There is no single fix for eyebrow growth as your age, genetics, and hormones play a major role in the growth. If your brow loss is due to medical reasons, you can speak to your doctor to get treatments. If the cause is not medical-related, the following tips should help speed up the growth process.

A balanced diet. A balanced diet containing lots of protein may help as your hair is mostly made up of proteins. Certain vitamins have also been linked to hair growth, vitamins like A, B, C, and D will boost hair growth.

Iron.  Another common cause of hair loss is iron deficiency anemia which can affect the brows. A diet rich in iron will help your eyebrows grow faster.

Biotin. Biotin, also known as vitamin H, is in the vitamin B class and has supplements for hair growth.

Avoid plucking, waxing, and threading.  As much as you want your brows to have that sharp, clean arch, you need to avoid tweezing, waxing, or any form of hair removal if you want your brows to grow fully. Instead, consider dyeing your eyebrows.

Castor oil. Castor oil is a home remedy used for hair loss over the years; it became more popular in recent times as a treatment for eyebrow and eyelashes hair loss.
